The service is every 30 minutes on a large comfortable ferry. The boat to the island is also very cool and well done - something about taking the ferry back and forth is magical and exclusive - especially for kids. There are thousands of palm trees which I assume were planted on the island (just look across to Wisteria Island) which create a true tropical oasis. The central pool is very nice, especially for kids as it has a zero entry side, and for us was about 15 degrees cooler (still warm) than our private cottage pool (more like a hot tub which wasn't very comfortable during the heat of the day). I would definitely recommend you walk the island (doesn't take long - maybe 1/3 mile total?) and check out the private homes as they're equally as pretty as the resort and many have very nice gardens. The beach chairs, umbrellas, bathrooms, hammocks, volleyball, and beach food / drink service is all well done. The beach (as advertised) is uncomfortably rocky and per their recommendations you should take water shoes. The island is very clean, exceptionally safe, and has postcard views in most directions. The island, facilities, and cottages are idyllic and beautiful. It's a nice place to stay but I think you'd go a little stir crazy after a few short days on the island itself - and with all the activities and fun of Key West nearby you'd be silly if you didn't leave regularly like we did (at least once per day and most dinners / evenings). For me it was somewhere in between the experience of a very nice resort and a very nice AIRBNB or VRBO. However I think that might be why they purposefully use the term "cottages" in the name. And while I guess it is officially a "resort" it didn't live up to my expectations of a full-service 5-star resort. We stayed in a 4-bedroom cottage with it's own pool on the beach near Latitudes restaurant which worked well for our group (especially the kids) very well.įirst I think the name says it all "Sunset Key Cottages" not "Sunset Key Resort". Sunset Key has been on my bucket list for quite some time and I'm very glad we went, and while not bad by any means I don't think we'll be rushing back. So the extended family (parents, kids, and sister) all just spent 6 days at Sunset Key Cottages and had a very good trip and overall experience.
